Impact on persons with disabilities

Please use this template to inform our elected officials of how the property tax cuts will affect persons with disabilities and programs like Creative Clay.

This letter can be sent to Governor Charlie Crist, Speaker of the House Marco Rubio, and the President of the Senate Ken Pruitt.  In regards to the property tax issue, this letter can be sent to Senator Mike Haridopolos and Representative Dean Cannon.

Dear________,

I know you have important tax reform decisions to make. These decisions will significantly affect the future of our community. While I agree that meaningful, fair tax reform is needed, I urge you to carefully consider the serious consequences the proposed tax cuts will have on local services – especially those concerning persons with disabilities.

I currently have loved ones who benefit from residential and day services for persons with disabilities. These programs are largely dependent on funding from city and county government to support their programs.

Please do not rush into a well-intended but hasty fix that could ultimately do more damage than good. Remember that when you leave Tallahassee and return to your local community, your citizens, your constituents will ultimately be left to manage the results of tax reform. Persons with disabilities that are currently living in supported residential settings and receiving day services will be looking to you for solutions to the lack of programs available after your proposed budget cuts! Will you have a workable
plan to address them and their needs?

There are thoughtful, simple approaches that can provide immediate relief to those most affected like small businesses, landlords and property owners who are not benefiting from the Save Our Homes tax cap. Longer-term solutions will require more study and input at the local level.

As a state elected official, I ask you to re-evaluate the tax proposals and listen to those at the local level who have real concerns that need to be heard.

Sincerely,

___________
