Creative Clay member artist Joseph (JJ) H.’s exhibit “Serpent’s View: The Sharpie Drawings of Joseph (JJ) H.” opens April 13, 5-9 p.m., during ArtWalk.
Originally from Ohio, JJ has attended Creative Clay’s Community Arts Program since 2004. He enjoys working with Sharpie markers, creating large-scale drawings of bold and brightly-colored images.
“JJ is a prolific, accomplished and self-motivated artist whose work can be found in private collections, local galleries, the
St. Petersburg Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) Store, and in our own Good Folk Gallery,” said Jody Bikoff, Director of Exhibitions. “He begins his process with black line work that emerges into pattern and design, incorporating human and animal figures often in a seascape or landscape. He then adds his colors, all over and inside each shape, creating a vibrating stained glass effect. His work is powerful and joyful to explore.”
JJ will be at ArtWalk to greet patrons and participate in a Sharpie drawing demonstration. ArtWalk is free and family-friendly. Visitors to our Good Folk Gallery can view the vast collection of JJ’s work and watch the process of how he creates his art, which often resembles stained glass.
